Defining Arthritis & a Chiropractors Role

Last updated on January 15, 2025

Arthritis is the name for many inflammatory conditions affecting the health of joints in the body, mainly in the spine, hands, hips and knees. Common arthritis symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness and reduced joint range of motion. Whilst the various types of arthritis differ in features, one thing we do know is that inflammation is always involved and the presence of systemic inflammation can worsen symptoms. Chronic inflammation in the joints can damage cartilage, bones, tendons or ligaments, irritate nerves.

Arthritis is a general term for inflammation of the joints, and it encompasses over 100 different types of joint diseases. The symptoms and causes of arthritis can vary widely depending on the specific type of arthritis a person has, but some common features are associated with this condition. The most common types of arthritis include:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and is a degenerative disease caused by previous trauma and repetitive physical stress on the joints. With OA, pain and symptoms usually occur after activity. Osteoarthritis can affect any joint in the body, but it commonly occurs in weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips, and spine, as well as in the hands.

Living with osteoarthritis can be challenging, but with proper management and lifestyle adjustments, many individuals can lead active and fulfilling lives. Early intervention and a comprehensive treatment plan are key to minimising symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease. Regular check-ups with healthcare providers are essential for monitoring the condition.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

RA is an inflammatory disease of the joints which is triggered by an autoimmune response. With RA, pain and symptoms are worse at rest and get better with activity. It is classified as an autoimmune disease, meaning that the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, leading to inflammation, pain, and swelling.

Managing rheumatoid arthritis often requires a multidisciplinary approach involving rheumatologists, physical therapists, and primary care providers. Support groups and counseling may also be beneficial, providing a space to share experiences and coping strategies.

While rheumatoid arthritis can be a challenging condition, early diagnosis and a comprehensive treatment plan can help individuals lead active and fulfilling lives. Regular follow-up with healthcare providers is essential for monitoring the disease and adjusting treatment as needed.

Ankylosing Spondylitis

AS is an inflammatory arthritis affecting the joints in the spine and pelvis, usually in people under 40 years of age. It belongs to a group of diseases known as spondyloarthritis, which also includes psoriatic arthritis and reactive arthritis. AS is characterised by inflammation that can lead to pain and stiffness in the affected areas. Over time, it may result in the fusion of the vertebrae in the spine, leading to a reduction in flexibility and a hunched posture.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a complex condition that requires early diagnosis and comprehensive management. With the right approach, many individuals can lead active, fulfilling lives despite the challenges posed by this disease. Ongoing research continues to explore new therapeutic options and a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of AS, providing hope for improved outcomes for those affected.

Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis  is an autoimmune inflammatory arthritis that proceeds psoriasis skin rash. Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) can lead to pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints, and it may also affect other areas of the body, including tendons and ligaments.  Psoriatic arthritis is a complex condition that requires a comprehensive approach to management. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to preventing long-term joint damage and improving the quality of life for those affected. Individuals experiencing symptoms should consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan.

Reactive Arthritis

Reactive arthritis is an inflammatory arthritis that develops after an infection, often in the bowel or genital areas. The infection causes activity in the immune system. This type of arthritis can develop following an infection in another part of the body, often the urogenital or gastrointestinal tract. It is characterised by joint pain and swelling, typically affecting the knees, ankles, and feet.

Reactive arthritis is a condition that highlights the interplay between infections and immune responses. Understanding its triggers, symptoms, and treatment options is crucial for effective management and improved quality of life for those affected. If you suspect you have reactive arthritis, it is important to seek medical advice.

How can chiropractic care help with arthritis?

During your first visit, the chiropractor will take a detailed medical history,  perform a thorough physical examination and if needed, refer you for a full spinal x-ray. Chiropractic care can help relieve pain and stiffness, increase range of motion and restore function of the joints and nerves. The type of treatment is always specific to your needs and your type of arthritis. Whilst some may benefit from manual adjustments, others may need more gentle low force techniques.

Understanding the symptoms and causes of arthritis is crucial for early diagnosis and effective management of the condition. If you suspect you have arthritis or are experiencing joint pain and inflammation, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation and treatment plan. Early intervention of inflammatory conditions like arthritis can help mitigate symptoms and improve overall quality of life.
