Chiropractic was developed by D.D Palmer in Iowa, USA back in 1895 and is now the largest natural health profession in the world! Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and muscle in your body! Your nervous system is protected by your skull and your spinal bones (vertebrae). Chiropractors perform gentle adjustments to the spinal bones (vertebrae) to restore normal spinal function which may minimise pain and improve health.
What is an adjustment?
Chiropractic treatment will often involve spinal adjustments which may minimise pain and improve function. Many people think that chiropractic adjustments ‘move the spine back into place’, however, that is not true.
The aim of spinal adjustments is to improve movement. Reduced spinal movement may be the result of trauma, postural stress, sedentary lifestyle or work related stresses. Your chiropractor will assess the spine which will usually involve; posture assessment, orthopaedic tests, neurological tests, range of motion examination, muscle palpation, spinal palpation. After the chiropractor assesses you and determines where the spine needs to be adjusted, a high velocity, low amplitude thrust is applied to the dysfunctional segment which will help to restore movement. Sometimes a ‘pop’ or ‘clicking’ sound will occur which is called a cavitation.
